WHAT IS ORAL AND MAXILLOFACIAL SURGERY?
An Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon studies in a hospital residency program for a minimum of three years after Dental School. He is proficient in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the teeth, supporting soft tissue and bone of the oral cavity and surrounding facial bones.
His expertise involves routine removal of teeth, removal of impacted teeth and surgical preparation of the mouth for artificial teeth (pre-prosthetic surgery).
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery also involves correction of facial and jaw deformities, treatment of facial and jaw fractures, closure of lacerations of the face and mouth, diagnosis of pain disorders, dental implants, biopsy of soft tissue and boney lesions and general anesthesia.
